Building a successful Finland for tomorrow

Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund is an independent public fund which under the supervision of the Finnish Parliament promotes the welfare of Finnish society. Sitra’s responsibilities have been stipulated in law.

Since its establishment, Sitra’s duty has been to promote stable and balanced development in Finland, the qualitative and quantitative growth of its economy and its international competitiveness and co-operation. Our operations are governed by a vision of a successful and skilled Finland. We have always approached our operations with strong belief in the future and in the ability of the latest technology to generate well-being.

Promoting systemic changes as a visionary and an enabler


Sitra´s aim is to help Finland prosper as global pioneer in systemic changes that generate well-being. A systemic change is a board, far-reaching change of the kind that simultaneously affects the structures and practices fo society and the everyday life of its citizens. Sitra is an enabler of such change. To see is to do. Systemic dimension is present in all Sitra´s activities and programmes. 

Sitra foresights, analyses and evaluates the key drivers of change and their impact on Finland. Sitra develops and implements new operating models and best practices through practical implementation.

Programmes

All the programmes and other activities put special emphasis on taking account the following topics when promoting reforms in the programme area:
  • Efficiency and transparency
  • Empowerment and active citizenship
  • Human -centric technology
  • Cooperation between private sector, public sector and citizens

Background and funding

Sitra was set up in conjunction with the Bank of Finland in 1967 in honour of the 50th anniversary of Finnish independence. The Fund was transferred to the Finnish Parliament in 1991.

Sitra’ s operations are funded with endowment capital and returns from capital investments.
