New sustainable business

Sitra invests in companies in selected industry segments. We invest on equal terms with other investors with the investments being tools to promote sustainable businesses. In addition to a good financial return, Sitra also aims to achieve a positive effect on society.

New investments are targeted at businesses that:

  • promote health and well-being
  • solve social problems in society
  • improve material and energy efficiency
  • speed up the smart use of natural resources
  • promote an ecological way of life

Investments also create new kinds of business networks in Finland.

In addition to good financial returns, Sitra looks for skilled management and competitive technology, products or services. Investments typically are in the range of 300,000-1 million euros and Sitra aims at a minority ownership of 10-30% in the first financing round.

Sitra mainly invests in equity, but may also grant convertible loans or, in special cases, regular loans. Sitra always seeks other investors to co-invest in each company.

Emphasis on responsible and active ownership

Sitra's operations comply with the principles of socially responsible investments. Sitra commits to the ownership and development of the portfolio company for an average period of 4 to 10 years. Exit from a portfolio company will be carried out according to a specific plan prepared together with all other co-investors. Sitra is an active owner and typically nominates a representative to the board of directors.

No subsidies to companies

Sitra grants no subsidies or free support to companies. Please visit Enterprise Finland for information on services and funding for small and medium-sized companies available from other organisations.
