Sitra has taken on the difficult task of ensuring Finland's success in the rapidly changing global environment. As far as the future is concerned, the only certainty is that uncertainty will continue to increase and the rate of change will be even faster than we have been used to. Careful consideration of potential futures can, however, help us to prepare for these changes and guide development in the desired direction.
Sitra strives to promote a future-oriented society and the use of foresight in Finnish decision-making. We have been studying the challenges of the future for many decades, and we have assessed our rate of success in, for example, the Ennustuksesta jälkiviisauteen (From Prediction to Hindsight) publication in 2010. The accomplishments of recent years include the organisation of the extensive Wellsprings of the Finnish Vitality programme and the National Foresight Network, which connects organisations engaging in prediction and invites the public to join the debate.
Foresight in Sitra's work
Our foresight operations focus on gathering and analysing data on existing trends for the needs of Finland and Sitra. Operations include constant gathering of general trend information as well as the development of a deeper understanding of project themes. The results of the foresight operations can be seen in the content of the Sitra strategy, in the selected programmes and in the areas of focus for the development of Finnish business life.
In Spring 2011, we developed a list of trends that we would take into account in planning our own internal operations. The list was based on an operational environment project completed with other Finnish foresight operators. The trend list is being used, for example, to challenge Sitra's strategic choices.
