On 10 June 2008, Sitra gathered energy sector decision-makers to Hanasaari for the Energy efficient future – from words into action seminar. The seminar launched Sitra’s five-year Energy Programme that aims to make the energy use of communities more effective. International experts in the field shared their experiences on best practices, challenges and possibilities.

The Energy Progamme focuses on the issues of energy saving and improved energy efficiency. The seminar aimed to affect the current energy debate by bringing influences and competence from abroad to the table.

“Energy saving objectives can only increase. We are facing paradigm level changes in the built environment and everyday life of citizens. Sitra’s aim is to give the energy sector a push from words into action,” says Jukka Noponen, Programme Director of the Energy Programme.

It is important for the future of the energy sector that international agreements, energy policies, technology markets and the industry’s operational preconditions correspond to the challenges. On the other hand, there is a concentrated effort to affect concrete issues, such as the lifestyles of citizens. Furthermore, the Energy Programme aims to utilise best practices from outside Finland.

Paul Waide, an analyst for the International Energy Agency, listed Finland’s challenges and opportunities from an international perspective. In particular, he emphasised the significance of energy efficient construction.

“New construction techniques can save considerable amounts of energy. Increasing energy efficiency plays a significant role when examining opportunities to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, also taking into account the ease of use for consumers. Guaranteeing the energy efficiency of old houses could also accomplish a great deal,” Waide summed up.

Projects Officer Ian Crosby from the International Finance Corporation addressed in particular business opportunities linked to energy efficiency.

“Worldwide, people have woken up to the fact that climate change is a real threat and this is revolutionary for markets with energy efficient products and services. Finnish companies may also benefit from the new markets created by the demand for these products, provided that the companies have the readiness and willingness to shift their operations and products to these markets.”
