Replacing conventional light bulbs, action model for replacing mercury bulbs in outdoor lighting (the Ekovalo project)

6/2009 - 5/2011

Closed project

The goal of the Ekovalo project was to improve the energy efficiency of lighting by replacing conventional and mercury bulbs with energy- and cost-effective lighting solutions.

The enforcement measures of the EuP Directive of the European Commission signify that conventional and mercury bulbs be gradually phased out of the market.

The project supplied research-based information for a consumer guide related to the features of bulbs with which to replace conventional ones, selecting the replacement bulbs, and the cost impact of the replacement. By consulting the guide, individual households can introduce energy-effective lighting as effectively as possible.

The project also resulted in an action model for municipalities/energy companies when gradually migrating from old mercury bulbs to new, more energy-effective outdoor lighting. The goal was to help cities and power plants to optimise the ongoing and forthcoming renovation of outdoor lighting.

The project was implemented by the Lighting Unit of the Aalto University Foundation. Tekes was the main financier of the project. The project was part of Sitra's Energy Programme.
