The use of materials is growing globally – and so are the associated emissions. Today, a few key materials – steel, plastics, aluminium and cement – account for 20% of global emissions. If their use is unchecked, the emissions from the use of these materials alone will cause a global warming of two degrees. Therefore, significant changes are required in the way materials are produced, used and disposed of. The circular economy can reduce emissions and offer a competitive advantage to pioneers in this sector. The session brings together experts and those from the industry to discuss how a net zero-emissions materials industry can be achieved in Europe and globally.
