European Environmental Bureau
Jeremy Wates has a long experience with environmental organisations, especially NGOs.
He is the Secretary General of the European Environmental Bureau, Europe’s largest federation of environmental organisations. Prior to this, he served for more than a decade as Secretary to the Aarhus Convention with the Geneva-based United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. Earlier, Jeremy led and coordinated the campaign by the European ECO Forum, an NGO coalition, to persuade governments to start work on a treaty on environmental democracy, which was later to become the Aarhus Convention. He has also founded and led the Irish environmental organization Earthwatch, the Irish member of Friends of the Earth International. During this period, he combined his environmental advocacy work with organic farming. He has also been awarded the David Brower Lifetime Achievement Award.
