Towards a society of longevity

  • Boundary conditions: Demographic structure and skills
  • Change: The future confidence of ageing societies is being tested
  • Opportunity: Building a long-lived and diverse society

Finland is facing an unprecedented transformation as the majority of the population becomes increasingly older and the proportion of young people declines. Birth rates are low, and population growth has come from immigration. At the same time, Finns are living longer and healthier lives. Over the next ten years, Finland must find ways to reduce the segregation between generations, regions and cultures, strengthen confidence in the future, and respond to demographic change. The key question regarding people and culture is how we move towards a society that is diverse and built around long life courses.
