RECONFIGURE: The powerful potential of the circular economy on an industrial scale

The European Union aims to develop a sustainable, low carbon, resource efficient and competitive economy by transitioning towards a more circular economy. In past decades, the focus on cutting down the CO2 emissions produced by industry has been mainly on the supply side. But how big a difference can the actions of a circular economy make within the demand-side to reduce emissions from heavy industry?

The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra and the European Climate Foundation (ECF) are organising a seminar about the opportunities and future of a circular economy, focusing on the role of the four largest materials in terms of emissions: steel, plastics, aluminium and cement. The seminar will be launching a pioneering study by Material Economics which highlights the role of the circular economy in meeting the targets of the Paris climate agreement by having the potential to reduce significant amount of annual CO2 emissions from heavy industry by 2050.
