COP26 Side Event: Strengthening NDC ambition through a circular economy: the path for 1.5 degrees

A circular economy can support countries on their path to the 1.5 degree goal.

  • November 6, 2021 at 3:30 pm - 4:45 pm

An approach for imbedding the circular economy into climate actions is through the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategies (LT-LEDS). UNDP, UNEP and UNFCCC are co-developing a guidance toolkit for policy-makers and stakeholders to integrate the circular economy, resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production policies and measures into their NDCs and LT-LEDS. This work is co-funded by Sitra.

On November 6 during the COP26 climate negotiations, UNEP, UNDP and UNFCCC are hosting an official COP26 side event, which will discuss how a transition to a circular economy can help countries on their path to the 1.5 degree target. The event will highlight why and how circularity should be imbedded into NDCs and LT-LEDS. During the event, countries that have been exploring ways to address their climate impacts through circular economy policies and actions will share their experiences.

The speakers include Sitra’s Senior Advisor Oras Tynkkynen, who has been following climate negotiations from the 1990’s.

Please note that the event is an in-person event held in Glasgow at the COP26 venue in the Global Action Room 2, Blue Zone. You can also watch the programme online via UNFCCC’s live stream.
