When your product is knowledge. Knowledge has vecome seen as the engine of economic growth and performance, and is now recognized as an essential factor of production. It is, however, a very special resource. On the one hand, knowledge is difficult to transfer across organizational boundaries, and on the other, when transfer is undesirable, preventing leakage is a challenge. How does one manage a firm whose product is knowledge?

Marketing knowledge-based services depends largely on reputation. Reputation is a delicate asset, and sustaining it over time necessitates a solid competence base. This book examines the creation of competencies and identifies the characteristics of successful service innovators.

The study also explores the nature of knowledge services with an eye toward their role in the broader innovation system. Where does knowledge underlying these services originate? What are the special characteristics of knowledge transactions in consulting relationships? And how do service firms support their clients’ innovation activities? These issues have implications for strategic management of knowledge service firms and their clients as well as national innovation policy.
