Challenge

Batteries play an important part not only in the electrification of transport but also in the realisation of renewable energy growth. Batteries are used in many sectors, meaning that many operators do not network with each other. In particular, the valuable and rare materials used in batteries means there is a huge international demand for circular economy solutions.

Solution

The project carried out by the Council of Tampere Region and Sitra prepared a status report on the circular economy in the battery sector (in Finnish) and put together a network of Finnish battery-sector operators. The objective of the project is to increase circulation at all stages of the battery’s life cycle, and to highlight recycling solutions and raw materials for batteries as well as the global value chains related to batteries.

Business Finland’s Smart Energy programme running between 2017 and 2021 will provide funding and support for the battery sector through the Batteries from Finland focus area. Companies and solutions included in the network will be guided to co-operate with Business Finland.
