The emphasis on citizen engagement and participation of the Commission Communication on the European Democracy Shield of November 2025 energised the European Civic Tech community. In particular, the Commission’s decision to establish a “Civic Tech Hub” as a focal point of information on civic tech resources and tools offers a signal that the EU institutions want to boost the up-take of civic tech. Sitra is organizing a roundtable discussion in Brussels to support the European Commission’s preparations for the European Civic Tech Hub. The event will be organized in cooperation with Bertelsmann Stiftung and in consultation with the European Commission. The purpose is to deepen a shared understanding of the kinds of support that European developers, service providers and user organizations of civic tech platforms currently need to boost the use and development of these technologies.
This invitation-only event will be opened by the Member of the European Parliament, Mika Aaltola, who is a member of the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield. To provide input to the discussion, Sitra will present findings from a new qualitative study, done in collaboration with MySociety, on the civic tech support needs of technological providers, civil servants, and civil society actors. The presentation will be followed by a roundtable discussion in the presence of European Commission officials. After the event, all participants are invited to enjoy lunch together on the hotel’s premises.
