At the inaugural meeting held on 18 June 2014, Pertti Korhonen, President and CEO of Outotec, was elected Chairman of the Board. The other members of the Board are Mikko Kosonen (vice-Chairman), Antti Herlin, Tapio Kuula, Matti Lievonen, Mika Anttonen and Henrik Ehrnrooth. Jouni Keronen was named CEO. He will leave Fortum to take up his new duties on 1 September 2014.

The Council aims to boost the overall competitiveness of Finland’s business sector and research organisations, helping them prepare for the threats posed by climate change and dwindling natural resources, while priming them to benefit from the related business opportunities. It will also promote Finland’s adoption of approaches now internationally recognised as best practices. The Council’s guiding principle is that profitable and sustainable business constitutes the most effective response to global environmental problems.

Core projects include developing the Helsinki region into a world-class cleantech reference area and the creation and practical implementation of roadmaps towards a low carbon industrial sector. The Council will also network in internationally selected focus areas.

”The Council has sprung into action, which bears testimony to the founding companies’ desire to combat climate change. By achieving emission reductions of our own and engaging in wide-ranging collaboration, we want to inspire others to do their part. We believe that this work will provide Finnish expertise, competitiveness and job creation with a major boost, as well as helping to guarantee a safer living environment for the next generation,” states Pertti Korhonen, Chairman of the Board.

More-specific information will be given on the Council’s activities in the autumn, once the project plans have been firmed up. As members, the Climate Leadership Council welcomes companies, research institutes, private individuals and organisations that strive to meet the Council’s objectives in their own activities.
