The data economy of the future is already here – debate on the new Data Act

The Data Act is the latest legislative proposal by the European Commission to build a single EU internal market for data. The proposed legislation covers all data and aims to make it easier to access and share data. What opportunities does it create for society, small and medium-sized enterprises and individuals?

The subtitled webinar recording

The European Data Strategy, adopted in February 2020, aims to make the EU a leader in data-driven societies. The EU wants to create an internal market for data, where data can move freely in line with European values, ensuring common rules on what data can be made available, to whom and for what purpose.

Better use of data can have a transformative effect on all sectors of the economy and can create new opportunities for economic growth, including for small and medium-sized enterprises. Harnessing data can also help us address societal challenges from tackling climate change to better healthcare.

The Data Act, the last horizontal building block of the Commission’s data strategy, will play a key role in the digital transformation, in line with the goals of the data strategy by 2030. The proposal sets rules for data sharing, the activities of the largest companies and for data sharing with third parties. What are the opportunities for society, small and medium-sized enterprises and citizens in Europe?

Director-General Roberto Viola will deliver the keynote speech. The event will also include the results of a study produced by Sitra and the law firm Bird & Bird on the data economy and EU-level regulation from the perspectives of citizens and businesses. It will feature comments from Mariane ter Veen representing Data Sovereignty Now and from SMEunited Policy Director Luc Hendrickx, Members of European Parliament Miapetra Kumpula-Natri and Damian Boeselager.

Join us online on Tuesday 10th of May at 16.00-17.30 EET. Please note 15.00-16.30 CEST.
