Teppo Turkki is Sitra’s specialist on East Asia and a Sitra Fellow. He is a specialist at both Sitra and Tekes, and is based in Tokyo in Japan, where he anticipates and follows the developments in Asia. His area of responsibility is wide: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia. From autumn 2012, Teppo worked as Sitra’s visiting researcher at the National Chengchi University in Taiwan and, until 2016, as the official representative of Finland’s foreign affairs administration in Taiwan. Before that, Teppo was the manager responsible for communications and public affairs at Sitra.


Teppo discusses and writes about societal issues actively and is a sought-after expert in many forums. His special expertise is related to global and national foresight and the identification of different societal changes. Teppo has been following the development and transformation in Asia since the mid-1980s. He has outlined the current shift in global economic power and innovations to the East, for example, in his books on Japan and the Korean Peninsula and while working as a visiting researcher in Japan.

What else?

Teppo has a colourful history. At the beginning of the 1980s, he was involved in founding several cultural and opinion magazines, such as the Suomi magazine, and acting as their editor. Teppo also brainstormed ideas for and was the editor at Radio City, one of the first local radio stations in Finland.  He has worked as a teacher and project manager at the department of cinematography of the University of Art and Design Helsinki and at the University of Jyväskylä, as well as the director of the IADE institute of the creative arts of Aalto University and the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki.
