At the beginning of 2012, Sitra launched a three-year strategic research and monitoring project focusing on East Asia.
China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan constitute one of the world’s largest integrating markets. China is expected to overtake the United States as the world’s leading economy within the next ten years.
The global shift in economic and political focus challenges Finland to reassess its position. Finland must be able to succeed in a new type of economic and cultural competition where East Asian countries – led by China – steer global development.
The next five to ten years will be decisive. The current rise of East Asia and the related global shift in paradigm require Finland to up its game in cultural competence and economic competitiveness. Many of Finland’s key opportunities and surprising challenges are projected to be related to East Asia in the future.
